Update: D.C. Police officers took all seven Greenpeace protesters into custody, charging them with second degree burglary, unlawful entry, and destruction of property, according to a release from the Metropolitan Police Department. They finally touched the ground around 10:05 p.m.
Police say the group illegally obtained access to the downtown construction site by breaking the locks. Then they climbed the construction crane, “and engaged in dangerous behavior by remaining there for the better part of the day.”
MPD says that while it respects everyone’s right to protest, these actions that took place were “dangerous and unlawful.” In addition, the incident tied up multiple government resources and blocked streets.

Greenpeace spokesperson Travis Nichols says the protesters feel they were able to show their solidarity with others protesting across the country against President Donald Trump’s policy agendas.
The group said in a statement earlier today that they hoped to “reach as many people as possible” through live broadcasts on Greenpeace USA’s Facebook page, tweets from the activists’ Twitter accounts, and media interviews.
The crane is located on the site of the former Washington Post building, which is being demolished and will eventually house Fannie Mae. In photos, the banner can be seen as far away from the White House (and depending on the angle even appears to be over it, though it is several blocks away).
A crowd of people gathered under the crane and near the White House to cheer on the protesters, Nichols says. Many of them have since left.
D.C. Police spokesperson Rachel Reid says it hasn’t been determined if the protesters will be arrested although “we do acknowledge” that the demonstration was illegal. Nichols says the protesters are “prepared for whatever comes next.”
He also says that Greenpeace will continue to show resistance “as long as Trump is president and he continues to put forth hateful, destructive polices.”
