It is going to be a nightmare trying to get tickets to Hamilton when the juggernaut makes its way to the Kennedy Center in the 2017-2018 season (unless you had the foresight and thousands of dollars to sign up for two seasons of tickets). But here’s another chance to catch Lin Manuel Miranda’s dizzying lyrics in action: Gala Theatre is staging his first Broadway show, In The Heights.
The Columbia Heights-based company is bringing the show to the stage in Spanish for the first time in the U.S.; there will be surtitles in English for the non-bilingual among us.
Director Luis Salgado said he didn’t have to think twice when asked to direct In The Heights, leaving the show on Broadway he was working on at the time to take the opportunity.
“This is how much this historic event means to me,” he said in a release. “In The Heights has always lived deep in my soul and a labor of love that goes beyond any traditional ‘job.’ It lifts my spirit to work on a show that honors my Latino community in pure celebration of its people and heritage, and that doesn’t rely or limit itself with the stereotypical ‘conflict’ of drugs or violence to make great theater.”
Bethesda’s Round House Theatre is also presenting In The Heights in September. And there’s always the slim possibility of getting Hamilton tickets when it comes to the Kennedy Center in mid-June of 2018.
In The Heights! will run April 20 through May 21 2017 at GALA Theatre (3333 14th Street NW). Tickets are $60.
This story has been updated to reflect that there will be surtitles in English.
