Shaw’s Zenebech Injera, long hailed as some of best Ethiopian food D.C. has to offer, is being reincarnated in an Adams Morgan location.
The owners announced the news on Facebook and said they plan to open their doors within two months.
Just a few weeks earlier, they had taken to that same page to ask for people’s thoughts on re-opening in Adams Morgan. Nearly 50 people chimed in with variations on this most charming response: “OH MY GOOSES YES PLEASE.” One man even said that he’s since moved out of the area but would make a specific return visit if they reopened.
In the gentrification tale as old as time, there were rumors for years that Zenebech Injera wouldn’t survive amid Shaw’s boom times. The owners finally did sell the property and close the doors to 608 T Street NW last fall to make way for a seven-story building.
But fans of the laid-back vibe and traditional Ethiopian dishes are getting their wish in the form of a new outpost at 2420 18th NW, which was formerly a hookah lounge on Adams Morgan’s main drag.
The owners told the Washington Post that it will have a larger dining room and they are applying for a liquor license. Still, some changes are afoot: a smaller kitchen means they’ll no longer be able to sell injera to home cooks and the prices will have to be a bit higher to make the economics work out.
