Capital Trans Pride returns for its eleventh year on May 20, with Virginia’s Gavin Grimm as a guest speaker.
“We’ve made significant progress regarding visibility, empowerment, and rights, but now more than ever, we must all continue to work to secure full equality,” said Bianca Rey, executive producer of Capital Trans Pride, in a statement. “Capital Trans Pride brings together the community for both a celebration and to share important information that has the potential to change the lives of those who attend.”
As in past iterations, there will be a resource fair, panel discussions, and workshops on topics like “Identity Documents and Name Changes,” “Safer Sex for Trans Bodies,” and “Resume Building in English and Spanish.”
The event comes three weeks before Capital Pride, which recently accepted the resignation of an executive producer over his 2016 article arguing that trans bathroom laws are unnecessary.
Grimm, a transgender male senior at Gloucester High School, is slated to speak at both Capital Pride and Trans Pride. The teenager overcame almost painful shyness to become a prominent leader in the legal fight for transgender bathroom rights. He’s the lead plaintiff in a lawsuit that was slated to be heard by the Supreme Court, though it has been sent back to a lower court following a decision made by the Trump administration.
Capital Trans Pride will take place on Saturday, May 20 at the Studio Theatre (1501 14th St NW) from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 pm.
