Judge Hiram Puig-Lugo handed down 10 years in prison to a man who was shot by D.C. police after he randomly fired a gun at people and vehicles in Petworth last year.
The incident took place on September 7, along several blocks of Georgia Avenue NW.
Prosecutors said 23-year-old Marc Jeffers, armed with a semi-automatic gun, was walking on down the street around 1:45 p.m. when he shot three times into the ground, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District. He then shot at two people and continued walking up the street pointing a gun at people and a Metrobus, before firing again at an SUV.
The SUV driver told police that he heard several gunshots, felt his vehicle being hit, and drove away, according to the release. He eventually flagged down officers and saw that a bullet struck his rear passenger door.
Meanwhile, Jeffers walked into the middle of the street on the 3800 block of Georgia Avenue and fired several shots at another Metrobus, according to the release. Several people on the bus said they got on the floor, and some said they saw Jeffers continue down the street firing his gun. No one was injured.

Multiple people came to report Jeffers to a D.C. police officer who was inside of a grocery store. The officer left the building, spotted Jeffers across the street, and told him to drop his weapon.
Police say after Jeffers ignored the officer’s commands multiple times, he “lifted the gun up to his chest level,” which prompted the officer to shoot Jeffers, striking him twice. He was taken to a local hospital.
Jeffers pleaded guilty in March to charges of assault with a dangerous weapon and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence. He’ll be on supervised release after he gets out of prison.
