A woman was fatally shot by police officers near a recreation center in Southwest last night. She has been identified as 41-year-old Isabelle Duval of Winchester, Virginia.
D.C. Police said they received a call around 6:30 p.m. about a car crash and then a call about a woman with a gun near the Bald Eagle Recreation Center in the 100 block of Joliet Street SW.
When officers responded to the scene, they found Duval holding a black semi-automatic pistol, according to a police account. After they gave several commands to drop the gun, she raised it in the direction of the officers. At least two officers fired at the woman, according to D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham.
Police said this afternoon that they recovered a gun from the scene.
“We shouldn’t have a firearm discharged in this city at all. It’s extremely dangerous. Not only is it dangerous, it scares people, especially young people,” Newsham said at a news conference. “It’s a rec center. We just shouldn’t have that kind of thing going on … With this community, who is very supportive of the rec center, we hate to see something like this happen.”
MPD plans to review footage from street cameras and a Metrobus that was nearby; officers’ body-worn cameras were also turned on.
Per department policy, the officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave.
“We are just happy that no young people or children were hurt,” said Ward 8 Councilmember Trayon White.
