Hundreds of people have reportedly lined up this morning at Glenarden Baptist Church in Upper Marlboro to pay their respects to Richard Collins III—the 23-year-old Bowie State University student who was fatally stabbed on Saturday.

A viewing for Collins, who was supposed to receive his degree on Tuesday, began at 9 a.m. The funeral is open to the public and slated to begin at 11 a.m.

Police arrested Sean Christopher Urbanski in connection to the crime, which took place on the campus of the University of Maryland in College Park around 3 a.m. on Saturday morning—two days after Collins was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army.

Collins, a black man, and his friends were waiting for an Uber when they heard Urbanski, a white UMD student, screaming as he approached the group. “Step left, step left if you know what’s best for you,” Urbanski told Collins, according to charging documents. After Collins said “no,” Urbanski stabbed him in the chest.

Local police and FBI officials are investigating the case as a possible hate incident after finding out that Urbanski was a member of a Facebook group that posts racist content.

On Monday, hundreds of Bowie State University students gathered for a vigil on campus. Lt. Col. Joel Thomas, head of Bowie State’s ROTC unit, opened the ceremony, calling Collins trustworthy and honest. “You could count on him. He was dependable,” Thomas said. “So as I remember Richard, I’m going to remember his character first and foremost.”

The following day, Collin’s father walked across the stage to accept his son’s diploma. Revered Darryl Godlock, a spokesman for the family, told The Washington Post that Collins wanted to follow in the footsteps of his father, who spent 20 years in the military.

In response to the murder, UMD’s president announced a series of steps to address hate-bias incidents on campus, where 25 such instances have been reported since 2015, according to WAMU.

Thousands of people are expected to gather with Collins’ family and distinguished guests today as they put him to rest. “It’s very tough,” Godlock told The Post. “We weren’t planning on doing a funeral.”
