WEDNESDAY, JUNE 14

The DC Jazz Festival continues through Monday. Check out last week’s roundup for DCist’s picks.

Quarter + Glory now hosts a rotating cast of local musicians every Wednesday from 7 to 10 p.m. FREE

Vocalist Ines Nassara is this month’s artist-in-residence at Strathmore. She gives the first of two performances this month at AMP. 7:30 p.m. 8 p.m. $17.

Bassist Charnett Moffett was raised among jazz royalty, as his father played drums for jazz pioneer Ornette Coleman. He long ago came into his own, however, and has appeared on over 200 recordings. He comes to Blues Alley as a bandleader to play selections from his most recent release, Music From Our Soul. 8 and 10 p.m. sets. $25 plus minimum and surcharge.

As he does every Wednesday, trumpeter Joe Brotherton leads his quintet at Jojo’s. 8 to 11 p.m. FREE

THURSDAY, JUNE 15

Herman Burney is one of D.C.’s top bass players, and he steps out front to lead a group on the Millennium Stage. 6 p.m. FREE

Stacy Kent has ten albums under her belt, including 2007’s Breakfast On A Morning Tram, which crossed over from the jazz charts to go platinum and earn Kent a Grammy nod. She has an orchestral recording due out later this year but continues to tour, stopping by Blues Alley on Thursday to kick off a four night run of 8 and 10 p.m. sets. $40-$45 plus minimum and surcharge.

Formed by its multilingual vocalist and band leader, Jean-Francis Varre, Sahel interprets musical genres influenced by African culture around the world. The band plays the Bossa Bistro & Lounge at 9:30 p.m. $10 at the door.

FRIDAY, JUNE 16

Area trumpeter Michael Thomas leads his quintet at Jazz In The Garden. 5 to 8:30 p.m. FREE

TrioVera is a group comprised of drummer Dominic Smith, bassist Victor Dvoskin, and pianist Harry Appelman. All three of these gentlemen are veterans of the D.C. jazz scene and the ensemble plays the Millennium Stage. 6 p.m. FREE

Baakari Wilder is internationally known for starring in the Broadway musical Bring In Da Noise, Bring In Da Funk. He has assembled an ace local rhythm section to back his tap dance work at Jazz Night in Southwest. 6 to 9 p.m. $5 at the door.

Saxophonist Elijah Jamal Balbed brings a band to Mr. Henry’s. 8 to 11 p.m. Two item per person minimum.

Rhizome hosts an evening of experimental music featuring Dave Scanlon, Sarah Hughes/Nate Scheible Duo, and Xenga + Marc Miller. 8 p.m. $10 at the door.

Tim Whalen has emerged as one of the D.C. area’s most distinctive pianists. Equally respected for his composing and arranging as he is for his improvising, Whalen’s quintet is sure to create some intriguing sounds at Twins Jazz. 9 and 11 p.m. sets. Tickets $15 plus minimum and surcharge.

SATURDAY, JUNE 17

At the deepest roots of American music lies the blues. The genre’s best female practitioners come to AMP to celebrate its history and the contribution women have made to the blues. 8 p.m. $20-$30.

SUNDAY, JUNE 18

BLACK LODGE + em.g is a DC based experimental electronic project from Alex Tebeleff (Paperhaus) and Maggie Gilmore. They headline an afternoon bill at Rhizome. 4 p.m. $10 at the door.

Villain & Saint hosts bands led by two of the area’s finest jazz guitarists. Tom Lagana plays and afternoon set from 4 to 6 p.m. $10. Steve Herberman‘s group takes the stage at 8 p.m. $10.

MONDAY, JUNE 19

Born in Malaysia and raised in Australia, Linda May Han Oh came to the United States to pursue an advanced degree in jazz at the Manhattan School of Music. She quickly rose up New York’s crowded scene and is now one of the world’s elite bassists, having worked with Pat Metheny, Joe Lovano, Vijay Iyer, and a host of other jazz greats. Oh is also coming into her own as a prolific composer and bandleader, and is touring in support of her latest release, Walk Against Wind. Her band comes to Blues Alley for 8 and 10 p.m. sets. $22 plus minimum and surcharge.

TUESDAY, JUNE 20

Blues guitarist Memphis Gold comes to Blues Alley for 8 and 10 p.m. sets along with guest vocalist Ms. Zeno. $20 plus minimum and surcharge.
