On April 21, campers near Hoop Pole Road in Little Orleans, Maryland—about 115 miles away from Washington—reported seeing a dead body, according to a release from the Maryland State Police Department.

Police say they recovered Ariel Arnaldo Espinal’s clothed, decomposed body about 15 to 20 feet from a dirt road, down an embankment.

Officials used medical records and x-rays to positively identify Espinal, who was a father and soon-to-be married man who worked at Annie’s Hardware in Petworth, according to NBC Washington.

The Metropolitan Police Department released a critical missing person report for Espinal in the fall. It said that he was last seen near the Fort Totten neighborhood around 2 p.m. on October 8, and he was wearing khaki colored jeans, a grey shirt, grey shoes, and a black jacket at the time.

The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit is overseeing the investigation, which is ongoing.
