The Newseum is commemorating this (high? low?) moment in journalism history with two objects that have risen from lowly reportorial tools to just about as close to iconic as they get in this industry: David Fahrenthold’s notepad and Ben Jacobs’ glasses.

Specifically, that would be the notepad that Farenthold used to track his reporting on then-candidate Donald Trump’s charitable giving (or lack thereof) and the spectacles that then-candidate Greg Gianforte broke when assaulting Jacobs during an interview the night before the Montana special election. They will go on display in the museum’s “News History Gallery” tomorrow.

“These two artifacts tell important stories about how journalists work, and the threats they face, even in the United States,” Patty Rhule, director of exhibit development at the Newseum, says in a statement. “David Fahrenthold unleashed the power of Twitter to report on Donald Trump’s claims of charitable contributions. Ben Jacobs’s broken glasses are a reminder that sometimes, people in power push back violently against journalists.”

Farenthold used that legal pad to communicate with legions of followers who were eager to crowdsource knowledge about Trump’s dealings. Eventually, it netted the Washington Post reporter a Pulitzer Prize.

Meanwhile, Jacobs, his glasses, and even his optometrist were catapulted to headlines after the Republican congressional candidate responded to some tenacious questioning (Jacobs’ job) with physical violence. “This is the strangest thing that has ever happened to me in reporting on politics,” Jacobs said at the time.

A day later, Gianforte went on to win the Montana special election. He was later sentenced to 40 hours of community service and 20 hours of anger management; Montana Democrats sent him an orange jumpsuit to commemorate his first day on the Hill yesterday. You know what happened to Donald Trump.
