The enigmatic Waldo has been hidden in children’s books for the past 30 years—and to celebrate, now he’s cloistered himself away in businesses around the District. Politics and Prose Bookstore is feting the 30th anniversary of “Where’s Waldo?” with a month-long scavenger hunt in partnership with 25 local independent shops.
“We’re looking forward to the idea of families tearing around the city, finding all these hidden Waldos,” says Jon Purves, the director of marketing and publicity at Politics and Prose. He says the scavenger hunt is open to everyone, not just children
It works like this: starting now, players can stop by the Children and Teens department at Politics and Prose to pick up a “Find Waldo” passport, which lists the 25 locations where Waldo is hiding. Take your passport with you as you travel to the different businesses, and when you spot one of the six-inch-tall Waldos, let an employee know so they can stamp or sign your passport. After you collect 10 stamps, you can stop by the bookstore for a small prize. If you collect 20 or more stamps, you can be entered into a grand prize raffle.
“The Waldos are quite small and made of cardboard, so they won’t be outside. If you’re rooting around in a storage cabinet or in an alley, you’ve gone to the wrong place. We don’t want people wandering through the kitchen,” Purves chuckles. “One easy way to know you’re at a Waldo business is they’ll have Waldo stickers on their window.”
If you spot him, feel free to snap to share on Twitter or Instagram with the hashtag #WheresWaldoDC to spread the word, and show the business some love, too. The event is organized by Candlewick Press, and “Where’s Waldo?” hunts are happening around the country this month.
“It’s a really cool way to get people to go into local businesses that they might not have otherwise gone to. We wanted to highlight independent stores and restaurants in particular,” Purves says. “We’re opening a new bookshop in Union Market later in the year and we’re really excited about it, so we featured a few businesses [Trickling Springs Creamery and Angelika Pop-Up] from there.”
The best part? At the end of the month, there will be a family-friendly Waldo-themed party at Politics and Prose featuring trivia and games. (You can get alcohol from the cafe.) Costumes are encouraged, so prepare your finest red-and-white striped apparel accordingly.
