Update 7/12: D.C. police say the victim was released from the hospital on July 12.

Original: A 13-month-old child was shot and wounded by someone wielding a handgun around 9 p.m. last night while outside in Northeast, according to D.C. police. He was taken to United Medical Center Children’s Hospital for what was described as non-life threatening injuries to his lower extremities, and is now in stable condition.

It appeared the child was not the intended target, but was instead hit in crossfire exchanged in an alley on the 1300 block of I Street NE, just north of the H Street corridor and just south of Trinidad. He appeared to be the only person injured in the exchange. Several gunshots were reported at the time of the incident, according to the police report.

“Older guys out here, they resort to firearms in our community, and this is the result. A little kid, a baby, gets struck,” D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham said at the scene. “He’s in the hospital undergoing surgery right now because two grown men thought they wanted to settle a dispute with a firearm. I think it’s despicable.”

Police say no arrests have been made, and they are still looking for two unknown suspects on charges of assault with a dangerous weapon.
