When we first met Symba, the 35-pound tabby, he was very reluctantly participating in an exercise regimen and the Humane Rescue Alliance was looking for a good home for him.

Within 24 hours, he was adopted by Kiah Berkeley and her family, and began adapting to a new life. His rotund body may have charmed us, but it certainly created problems for the cat.

Less than a week after taking him in, Berkeley explained that his obesity “prevents him from moving much, cleaning himself, scratching himself” and more, and his traumatic move initially made him slow to warm up to his new owners.

But now the cat, who has been rechristened Vito after the portly character on The Sopranos, has gotten much more comfortable. Vito has begun going downstairs on his own to explore the rest of the house, according to Berkley.

Plus, a month after he first jumped on their bed for some belly scratches, the cat has decided he likes it there. “He sleeps between us now,” says Berkeley.

For a gussied-up view of what that looks like, check out the wedding photos from Berkeley and her partner Peter Sorkin, who tied the knot in early July. Taken by photographer Kristi Odom, the portraits capture love in a way that will melt even the most jaded of hearts.

Berkeley isn’t sure about the cat’s precise weight right now (“he squirms too much to weigh him at home”), but says that “he doesn’t eat much so we are sure he has lost weight. He’s definitely adjusting!”

To get up-to-the-minute updates on Vito, I highly recommend following him on Facebook.
