Saxophonist Vaughn Ambrose brings a group to Alice’s Jazz & Cultural Society. 6 to 9 p.m. $5 at the door.

The experimental sounds of Spookstina and Mount Ranier will be at the Bossa Bistro & Lounge for an early set. 7 p.m. $5 at the door.

Pianist Andrew Adair‘s trio plays 8 and 10 p.m. sets at Blues Alley. $20 plus minimum and surcharge.

Joe Vetter leads a piano trio at Twins Jazz. 8 and 10 p.m. sets. $10 plus minimum and surcharge.

Baltimore’s Tongue In Cheek brings its ’20’s style hot jazz and ragtime to the Bossa Bistro & Lounge. 9 p.m. $5 at the door.

THURSDAY, JUNE 20

Saxophonist Marshall Keys and his trio play Jojo’s from 7:30 to 11 p.m. FREE

Poncho Sanchez is one of the great Latin jazz percussionists and bandleaders. His infectious band plays 8 and 10 p.m. sets from Thursday through Sunday at Blues Alley. $50-$55 plus minimum and surcharge.

The minimalist New York City duo of drummer/percussionist David Grollman and saxophonist Nathaniel Morgan, who perform as Dybbuk, headlines a bill of experimental music at Rhizome. Also performing are Leo Svirsky and Ashley Shey. 8 p.m. $10 at the door.

The Twins Jazz Orchestra plays 8 and 10 p.m. sets at the U Street venue. $10 plus minimum and surcharge.

Formed by its multilingual vocalist and band leader, Jean-Francis Varre, Sahel interprets musical genres influenced by African culture around the world. The band plays the Bossa Bistro & Lounge at 10 p.m. $10 at the door.

FRIDAY, JUNE 21

Elijah Balbed is a rising saxophonist who was in Chuck Brown’s band during the late go-go Godfather’s final days. Balbed’s JoGo Project brings together jazz and go-go at Jazz in the Garden. 5 to 8:30 p.m. FREE

Vocalist Mavis Waters brings her ensemble to Jazz Night in Southwest. 6 to 9 p.m. $5 at the door.

Area vocalist Jeff Weintraub plays Mr. Henry’s. 8 to 11 p.m. Two item per person minimum.

Doc Scantlin and His Imperial Palms Orchestra bring the classic big band elegance of the ’20s, ’30s, and ’40s to the Carlyle Club. 8 p.m. Tickets $35 plus minimum and surcharge.

Ted Chubb is a New York-based trumpeter and music educator who recently released his latest album, Gratified Never Satisfied, on Unit Records. His sextet is touring in support of the release and comes to Twins Jazz for 9 and 11 p.m. sets on Friday and Saturday. $15 plus minimum and surcharge.

SATURDAY, JUNE 22

Vocalist Kim Scudera joins Batida Diferente for an evening of Brazilian jazz at Mr. Henry’s. 8 to 11 p.m. Two item per person minimum.

SUNDAY, JUNE 23

Is@s@ is a Madrid-based guitarist who is heavily inspired by American roots musicians such as John Fahey, Glenn Jones and Jack Rose. He headlines a bill of “primitive” guitar music at Rhizome. 5 to 7 p.m. $10 at the door.

Vocalist Maiesha Collins performs at Alice’s Jazz & Cultural Society. 6 to 9 p.m. $5 at the door.

Area guitarist Justin Lees brings a band to Twins Jazz for 8 and 10 p.m. sets. $10 plus minimum and surcharge.

World jazz outfit, The Fourth Stream, plays the Bossa Bistro & Lounge. This will be a farewell show for longtime band member and saxophonist Bobby Muncy. 8:30 to 11:30 p.m. No cover. (Author’s note: This is my project).

The Robert Penn Blues Band plays Blue Monday Blues. 6 to 9 p.m. $5 at the door.

Critically acclaimed vocalist Tessa Souter, a jazz singer’s jazz singer, plays a 6 p.m. show at the Millennium Stage. FREE

Guitarist Mark McGuire is the featured act for an evening of ambient/noise sounds at Rhizome. 8 p.m. $10 at the door.

Saxophonist Jeff Antoniuk was among the first local jazz musicians we profiled here on DCist. He teams up with guitarist extraordinaire Paul Bollenback to lead a group through 8 and 10 p.m. sets at Blues Alley. $20 plus minimum and surcharge.
