A jury has found a man guilty of a double murder that took place in a Shaw rowhouse in 2014.
24-year-old Jeffrey Neal has been found guilty of murdering two of his former roommates, according to William Miller, spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for D.C.
Neal became friends with Leon Young and Delano Wingfield at McKinley Technology High School in Northeast and moved in together after graduation. But other friends said their relationship had become tense over the years, and ended in a gruesome crime.
Police discovered Young’s body on June 13, 2014 under an air mattress in the home’s attic with a plastic bag over his head. They concluded that he’d been dead for a week at that point. Officials found Wingfield on June 16, partially buried in the backyard of the home. Neal was arrested the following day.
Autopsies showed that Young and Wingfield, who were found nude, had been beaten in the head with a hammer.
During the trial, which included nearly 40 witnesses, Neal’s attorney said that the three men were lovers and Young killed Wingfield “in a jealous rage,” according to The Washington Post. He then attacked Neal, who killed him in self-defense, the defense argued.
While prosecutors acknowledged the love affair, they argued that Neal killed Young because of money disputes, then attacked Wingfield because he had witnessed the killing.
Neal will be sentenced on October 20.
