After multiple weekends of downpours and storms, meteorologists say the D.C. region had record-breaking rainfall last month.

Dulles Airport saw the wettest July on record, according to the National Weather Service. People in Northern Virginia whipped out their galoshes for 8.8 inches of total rainfall throughout the month.

While July’s rainfall in D.C., which is counted at Reagan National Airport, was higher than Dulles at 9.15 inches, it ranked seventh compared to previous years. The wettest July in the District was recorded in 1945 when we got 11.06 inches.

July’s place in D.C.’s top 10 wettest days includes 3.78 inches of rain that poured last weekend—3.31 inches fell on Friday, marking a record for July 28, according to the Capital Weather Gang. D.C. sees an 3.73 inches of rainfall per month.

The gang said that last weekend’s weather resembled a winter Nor’easter, but because the air had more humidity, it caused more precipitation than in the winter.

The weekend before, Washington recorded at least 2.04 inches, which was the wettest weekend of 2017 at the time.

The least amount of July’s rainfall in the region took place in Maryland, but the National Weather Service still finds it noteworthy. People near Baltimore-Washington International Airport saw 7.11 inches, landing last month as 19th on the rainfall ranking. BWI’s wettest July goes all the way back to 1889, which saw 11.03 inches of rain.

(Rainfall recordkeeping began in Washington and Baltimore in 1872 and at Dulles in 1963).

This coming weekend, the National Weather Service predicts a mostly sunny Saturday so D.C. area can make up for lost outdoor plans.
