Despite the ascendance of Amazon and other online retailers, independent bookstores in the District continue to open and thrive.
Now, add a new option to the list of mom-and-pop spots where you can peruse the written word. Solid State Books is opening at The Apollo on H St. NE, the recently opened mixed-used development between 6th and 7th streets that also houses Whole Foods, The Daily Rider, and The Wydown.
“Solid State Books will operate as a full-service general interest bookstore with a deep and diverse selection of fiction and non-fiction titles curated to appeal to neighborhood residents of all ages,” the website says, promising a slate of programming as well as “a coffee bar with a delicious selection of snacks, beer, and wine.” The news was first flagged by Popville.
Co-owners Scott Abel and Jake Cumsky-Whitlock are both former employees of Kramerbooks & Afterwords in Dupont, Abel as the general manager for a decade and Cumsky-Whitlock as head buyer. They were part of the exodus of the management team from the 40-year-old store in February, following a series of disagreements with the new owner.
Signage in the windows of the forthcoming Solid State Books promises it is “coming soon.”
“THIS IS HAPPENING,” says a Solid State Books Instagram post. “#onlyfreakingoutalittle”
