After a rookie firefighter was hit by a fire truck on the job, his colleagues are hosting a breakfast fundraiser on Wednesday to support his recovery.
It’s taking place at the Tune Inn Restaurant & Bar on Capitol Hill from 8 a.m. until noon.
Dane Smothers, Jr. was responding to a house fire near the H Street Corridor when he was hit by a ladder truck while getting his equipment ready. After being pinned between the engine and the other truck, he was rushed to Medstar Washington Hospital in critical condition. Officials say he had traumatic injuries to his upper body.
D.C. police report that the incident took place on August 3 around 11:30 p.m.
It was the 28 year old’s third month on the job and his first fire, according to The Washington Post. He’s assigned to Engine 3 on New Jersey Avenue NW near Union Station.
People who know Smothers described the D.C. native to The Post as nice and quiet, with a strong presence.
Mayor Muriel Bowser in a statement that Smothers’ injury “reminds us all of the bravery and dedication of our first responders. Our thoughts and prayers are with Firefighter Smothers, his family, and his fellow Fire & EMS colleagues. We will do all we can to assist them during this very difficult time.”
The incident is under investigation, but officials don’t believe any protocols were broken, WTOP reports.
A GoFundMe page has been set up for Smothers with a goal of raising $10,000 for his medical expenses. So far, 30 people have donated $1,530.
The fundraiser on Wednesday at Tune Inn Restaurant & Bar includes a breakfast buffet and drinks for a $20 donation.
