The D.C. Fire and EMS Department is investigating whether a firefighter who was attacked by a crowd on Sunday was intoxicated or under the influence of drugs when he responded to a call in Southeast.

The firefighter, who is also an emergency medical technician, responded to a call for an injured child in a home near Marshall Heights, according to a report from the Metropolitan Police Department. A witness told police that he offered to treat the child, but the parents refused because they believed he was inebriated.

Fire department officials released a statement about their investigation saying that “at some point Sunday afternoon, while still on the scene, allegations were made that the member who was assaulted was possibly intoxicated or under the influence of drugs.”

While the firefighter and his partner were returning to their ambulance, he was assaulted by “unknown males in the neighborhood for unknown reasons,” according to the police report. The firefighter was left with a broken jaw and is currently hospitalized.

The child was taken to a nearby hospital in another ambulance and was treated for minor injuries.

NBC Washington obtained a cellphone video that captures minutes before the attack. A man repeatedly tells the firefighter, “you’re under the influence, you need an ambulance yourself!”

The firefighter, who’s has not been identified, has reportedly been on the job for about 10 years. Fire officials say he’ll be placed on administrative duty as he’s “now the subject of a comprehensive internal review.”

Two witnesses told police that they saw a crowd of men surrounding the firefighter during the attack, but they were unable to give descriptions of the suspects. Police say the suspects fled the scene and no arrests have been made. MPD is also still investigating the case.
