A Maryland couple who made headlines for posting disturbing “prank” videos featuring their children now faces charges that could put the duo in jail for up to five years.
The Frederick News-Post reports that prosecutors are pursuing two counts each of neglect of a minor against Mike and Heather Martin. They created the “DaddyOFive” YouTube page, where they posted videos featuring what they called “prank” videos, which often showed the parents hitting the children and bringing them to tears.
The Martins were raising five children together. The charges in Frederick County Circuit Court allege neglect against two of their kids: Cody and Emma, and were brought on July 27. The maximum possible sentence for the charges is five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
In April, a video titled “Invisible Ink Prank” garnered the biggest public outcry. It featured the Martin parents screaming and cursing at Cody for allegedly covering his room with ink that was actually smeared by his stepmother. The nine-year-old was left in tears.
“Psycho Clown Attacks Family” and “Dad Punches Kid In The Face,” are among the titles of other videos that also feature the couples’ older children.
As the public began to speak out, there was an online petition created to get Child Protective Services to investigate the couple and another petition to get the account banned from YouTube.
All of the prank videos have been removed from the YouTube page, which brought the family and estimated income of $200,000 to $350,000 a year.
The Martins released an apology video in which Mike acknowledged that they made “some terrible parenting decisions and we just want to make things right.”
Rose Hall, the biological mother of Cody and Emma, said in a video that she had regained custody of the children after filing an emergency order.
The couple’s attorney told Frederick-News that there is a plea agreement, but he wouldn’t provide details “because things may change before the court date.” The plea hearing is scheduled for September 11.
