James Comey, the Federal Bureau of Investigations director fired in May by the president, will be the keynote speaker at Howard University’s opening convocation this September for students.
The historically black university announced that it appointed Comey as its 2017-2018 Gwendolyn S. and Colbert I. King Endowed Chair in Public Policy, so his opening address to students on September 22 won’t be his last.
Comey will conduct five lectures on campus on topics to be determined after he meets with students. Howard says he is donating his $100,000 compensation to a university scholarship fund.
Howard President Wayne A.I. Frederick says that Comey’s “expertise and understanding of the challenges we continue to face today will go a long way in sparking rich discussion and advancing meaningful debates across campus.”
The King family, who established the lecture series, say they are “delighted” by the choice. “Since the chair was established in 2008, five prominent public leaders have come on Howard’s campus to engage students on issues related to the public interest, including an examination of the intricacies of policy making,” said Gwen King in a statement. “Few in public life are better suited for this role than the experienced and esteemed Jim Comey.”
The position is designed to introduce Howard students to public policy officials. Other holders of the King chair in prior years include Maryland Congressman Elijah Cummings.
The announcement from the school points out that Comey “supported several programs across the organization that focused on diversity initiatives” during his time at the FBI.
It does not address his role in the 2016 election or his contentious terms of his conclusion at the FBI, which Comey described as a series of interactions with President Donald Trump that “concerned me greatly” in his opening statement to a hearing at the Senate Intelligence Committee. His actions after his termination led to the hiring of former FBI director Robert Mueller as a special counsel to look into the relationship between Trump’s campaign and Russian officials.
Crowds of Washingtonians waited on long lines at local bars to watch him testify live. He has otherwise kept a low profile since his departure from the law enforcement agency, though he has a multimillion dollar book deal.
“I am honored to hold the King chair this school year. Howard has a longstanding history of being a vibrant academic community and the perfect place to have rich dialogue on many of the most pressing issues we face today,” said Comey in a statement. “I look forward to contributing to this remarkable institution and engaging students and faculty alike.”
