While someone in Massachusetts made U.S. lottery history last night, two people in the D.C. region are also $1 million lottery winners.
Maryland Lottery and Gaming announced that a $1 million ticket was sold at a gas station in Gaithersburg. And the Virginia Lottery announced a $1 million ticket was sold at gas station in Lorton.
Meanwhile, a historic $758.7 million Powerball jackpot winner is celebrating after purchasing a ticket in Chicopee, Massachusetts.
The winning numbers were 6, 7, 16, 23, 26, and the Powerball was 4—the odds of picking all six winning numbers is about one in 292 million.
The $758.7 million prize is the largest amount won by a single ticket in the history of the U.S. lottery. The winner, who hasn’t been identified, can choose to take the money over about 30 years or in a lump sum of $480.5 million after taxes.
People in the D.C. area also took home smaller winnings.
In Virginia, four tickets each won $200,000 and seven tickets each won $50,000. And there were 201,079 winning tickets sold in Maryland with prizes starting at $4.
Americans saw the largest Powerball jackpot in U.S. history last January at $1.586 billion. It was split among the people in Florida, Tennessee and California.
As folks in D.C. folks got caught up in Powerball fever during that time, Allan Eberhart of Georgetown University advised people to do practical things with their winnings like meeting with a financial advisor, making wise investments, and, most surprisingly, keep their day job.
