Officials say that two men who jumped into the Potomac River on Sunday evening have died. One man was pronounced dead at a local hospital and the other victim died at the scene.

Police identified the victims as 30-year-olds Danny Garcia and Calvin Cerpas from Manassas.

Witnesses told authorities that the men went into the water and didn’t resurface, which prompted land, boat, and helicopter searches, according to fire officials. It took about two and a half hours to locate both men near the Key Bridge, which separates D.C. from Arlington.

“The circumstances around finding them were difficult because there were docks and work barges because work is being done the Key Bridge,” said D.C. Fire and EMS spokesperson Vito Maggiolo.

Officials located the first victim about an hour later after the search began. Police said that he was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The second victim was found around 11 p.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A woman who said she knew both men told NBC Washington that they were all hanging out in Georgetown when one of the men decided to jump in the river. She said that the other man saw that his friend was in trouble so jumped in to help.

Another woman at the scene told NBC that one of the men was trying to hold onto the side of a boat, “but he couldn’t and he kept trying to hold onto it, but he couldn’t and so we just saw him just go under.”
