White Flint, Grosvenor-Strathmore, Medical Center, and Bethesda stations will be closed from Saturday until Labor Day. The four Red Line stations will shutter this weekend and next weekend as crews work on rail tie renewal, joint elimination, and leak mitigation projects.
Passengers can catch free shuttle buses between Friendship Heights, Bethesda, Medical Center, Grosvenor, White Flint, and Twinbrook stations.
Elsewhere on Metrorail this holiday weekend, Orange and Silver Line trains will run every 24 minutes from Saturday through Monday as crews install communication cables for cell phone coverage between Clarendon and East Falls Church stations.
Blue Line trains will also be running every 24 minutes because trains will be single tracking between Van Dorn Street and Franconia-Springfield as crews repair platforms and fences, among other maintenance work.
There’s no scheduled maintenance work or delays on the Yellow and Green Lines.
Red Line
Buses replace trains between Friendship Heights and Twinbrook. | 7:00 a.m. Saturday through closing Monday
Red Line trains will operate at regular weekend intervals between Shady Grove & Twinbrook and between Friendship Heights & Glenmont. Additional trains will operate between Silver Spring & Farragut North between 9:00 a.m. & 9:00 p.m.
This work will take place over two weekends, September 2-4 and 9-10.
Free shuttle buses will operate between Friendship Heights, Bethesda, Medical Center, Grosvenor-Strathmore, White Flint and Twinbrook. Please allow 10 minutes of travel time for each station stop.
Stations closed: White Flint, Grosvenor-Strathmore, Medical Center and Bethesda.
To allow for shuttle bus connections, the last trains will depart:
- Shady Grove at 11:45 p.m. Saturday, 9:45 p.m. Sunday and Monday, 40 minutes earlier than normal.
- Glenmont at 12:33 a.m. Saturday, and 10:33 p.m. Sunday and Monday, regular time.
Work performed: Rail tie renewal, joint elimination and leak mitigation.
Tap your SmarTrip card each time you enter and exit the Metrorail system. Riders traveling through the work zone will be charged for a single, continuous trip.
