If you’ve been considering adopting a new pet, the Humane Rescue Alliance is making a plea to do it this week so the shelter has space for dogs and cats that are being relocated to D.C. from Texas in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.
From Thursday through Sunday, Washington National’s pitcher Max Scherzer and his wife are covering all adoption fees to help the cause.
After the storm barreled into southeast Texas on Sunday, parts of Houston saw as much as 51.88 inches of rainfall, according to the National Hurricane Center.
While there have been some notable rescues and reunions for animals caught in the devastation, shelters in Texas are still “facing large numbers of incoming animals made homeless by this storm and need to move them to safety,” said Stephanie Shain, the alliance’s chief operating officer, in a release.
The Humane Rescue Alliance is one of many shelters across the country that’s receiving animals that have been separated from their owners or were homeless strays prior to the storm. “HRA stands ready to take in animals, regardless of breed, with open arms and we look forward to finding forever homes for them in our nation’s capital,” Shain said.
District residents can adopt animals that have already been neutered at either of the alliance’s two adoption centers in D.C.
This post has been updated to include the Scherzers’ coverage of adoption fees during the weekend.
