Local vocalist Akua Allrich brings her mix of jazz and soul to the lawn at Strathmore. 7 p.m. FREE

Marcia Ball, one of the country’s finest blues pianists, plays The Birchmere at 7:30 p.m. $25.

Saxophonist Dave Koz is one of the biggest names in smooth jazz. He shares the stage at Wolf Trap with crooner Michael Bolton and ex-Sly & The Family Stone bassist Larry Graham. 8 p.m. $25-$65.

Veteran area saxophonist Marty Nau plays 8 and 10 p.m. sets at Twins Jazz. $10 plus minimum and surcharge.

As we mentioned in yesterday’s Weekly Music Agenda, Rhizome hosts free jazz outsiders Creative Healing, New York trio Trigger, D.C. experimenter Joshua David Hoffman, and the free folk trio of Layne Garrett, Jenny Moon Tucker, and Pony Payroll Bones. Doors 8 p.m. $10.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 31

BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet has, over the past 40 years, become synonymous with Cajun music. The band comes to The Hamilton for a 7:30 p.m. show. $19.25-$29.75.

Area vocalist Sharón Clark is a jazz singer in the most classic sense. She plays a 7:30 p.m. set at The Carlyle Club. $25 plus minimum and surcharge.

MarchFourth uses 20 musicians and performers to create a production that blurs the line between concert and circus. The ensemble comes to the Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper Club with Baltimore’s Orchester Praževica opening. 8 p.m. $25 plus minimum and surcharge.

Guitarist Chris Thomas King is best known for the Robert Johnson-esque character he portrayed in the hit Coen Brother’s film, O Brother, Where Art Thou? While that role recreated a certain place and time, he has devoted his career to bringing the blues into the 21st century. King will bring his contemporary sound to Blues Alley on Thursday for a four-night stand of 8 and 10 p.m. sets. Tickets $22.50-$27.50 plus minimum and surcharge.

Brazilian vocalist Cissa Paz is at the Bossa Bistro & Lounge for her monthly appearance. 10 p.m. $10 at the door.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 1

Sharón Clark gets another shout out this week for her performance at Jazz Night in Southwest. She’ll share vocal duties with fellow D.C. veteran Chad Carter and their stellar band includes local jazz legend Jackie Hairston on organ. 6 to 9 p.m. $5 at the door.

Dial 251 for Jazz plays Mr. Henry’s. 8 to 11 p.m. Two item per person minimum.

Tim Whalen has emerged as one of the D.C. area’s most distinctive pianists. Equally respected for his composing and arranging as he is for his improvising, Whalen’s quintet is sure to create some intriguing sounds at Twins Jazz. 9 and 11 p.m. sets. Tickets $15 plus minimum and surcharge.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 2

Reston’s annual Lake Anne Jazz & Blues Festival, now in its 11th year, takes place on Saturday. The lineup features some of the area’s finest, including vocalist Integriti Reeves and bassist Kris Funn‘s Cornerstore. 1 p.m. FREE

The Lincoln Theatre‘s Labor Day Weekend Festival begins on Friday and runs through Sunday. Seats to the daily 7 p.m. shows are available on a first-come-first-served basis. The local jazz community is represented on Saturday with a performance from the Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra. FREE

Saturday is your chance to break out the zoot suit and wingtips for the Squirrel Nut Zippers show at The Birchmere. 7:30 p.m. $45
