Flutist Bill Haymon leads a band at Alice’s Jazz & Cultural Society. 6 to 9 p.m. $10 at the door.
The Grammy winning band, Los Texmaniacs, is a conjunto formed in 1997. Its leader, Max Baca, wanted to create an ensemble that incorporated elements from genres such as rock ‘n’ roll and jazz, while still honoring the roots of the genre. The band plays an early show at the Bossa Bistro & Lounge. 7 p.m. $20 at the door.
Saxophonist Bob Schwartz leads his group through 8 and 10 p.m. sets at Twins Jazz. $10 plus minimum and surcharge.
A guitarist’s guitarist, Kurt Rosenwinkel rose to prominence through a stint with the great Gary Burton in the early ’90s, and began recording a string of critically acclaimed albums as a bandleader toward the end of that decade. Now based in Europe, he does not often do club tours in the U.S., but he is in the midst of one that stops at Blues Alley for 8 and 10 p.m. sets. $30 plus minimum and surcharge.
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 7
Vocalist and Broadway veteran Ann Hampton Callaway comes to the Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper Club. She pays tribute to the First Lady Of Song by digging into Ella Fitzgerald’s catalog in celebration of the legend’s centenary. 8 p.m. $35 plus minimum and surcharge.
Area vocalist Julie Mack brings her band to Twins Jazz for 8 and 10 p.m. sets. $10 plus minimum and surcharge.
Drummer Dennis Chambers and guitarist Mike Stern are among the most celebrated jazz musicians of their generation. They both came into their own within the fusion scene of the 1980s and have since appeared on countless recordings. Stern and Chambers also have a long history of co-leading bands, and they come to Blues Alley with trumpeter Randy Brecker and bassist Tom Kennedy to launch a four night run of 8 and 10 p.m. sets. $40-$45 plus minimum and surcharge.
The Feedel Band combines jazz, funk, and traditional Ethiopian music to create a truly groovy sound. They’ll play the Bossa Bistro & Lounge. 9:30 p.m. $10 at the door.
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 8
Drummer Sherrie Maricle is the driving force behind DIVA, a collective of female jazz musicians that perform in a variety of different configurations, one of which is 3DIVAS with Annapolis-based bassist Amy Shook and pianist Jackie Warren. The trio, along with special guests, perform from 6 to 9 p.m. at Jazz Night in Southwest. $5 at the door.
Vocalist Tamika Love Jones leads a groove based band at Bloombars that features ace bassist Tarus Mateen. This will be a standing room event, as the band wants to get people moving. 7 p.m. Donations accepted.
Trumpeter Kevin Cordt plays Mr. Henry’s from 8 to 11 p.m. Two item per person minimum.
Black Masala brings its brass-driven, international sound to Songbyrd. 8:30 p.m. $15 in advance/$17 at the door.
When we first profiled The Flail, way back in 2008, we wrote how rare it was to have actual jazz bands in today’s world. Now nearly a decade later, the group is still going strong, making it even more of a rarity. The Flail returns to D.C. on Friday and Saturday for performances at Twins Jazz. 9 and 11 p.m. sets. $15 plus minimum and surcharge.

Rosslyn’s Gateway Park hosts this year’s iteration of the Rosslyn Jazz Festival. The Soul Rebels, bring their infectious New Orleans brassiness to headline the concert, whose lineup also includes Xenia Rubinos and Joe Keyes & The Late Bloomer Band. 1 to 7 p.m. FREE
As is always the case on the Saturday after Labor Day, Silver Spring has its own celebration. The Silver Spring Jazz Festival features a band under the direction of fusion keyboardist Lao Tizer along with local smooth jazz artist Marcus Johnson and more. 3 to 10 p.m. FREE

Bideew Bou Bess translates to “New Star” from its original Wolof. This Senegalese band, comprised of three brothers, mixes languages and genres to create music that comments on society within Senegal and elsewhere. The group plays at 6 p.m. on the Millennium Stage. FREE
