Shortly before her summer-long exhibit at the Hirshhorn culminates in a concert at the museum on Sunday, Yoko Ono will bring her art to the side of a building that is decidedly more rectangular.
Ono’s new work, a public mural called “RELAX. YOUR HEART IS STRONGER THAN WHAT YOU THINK!”, will debut on the side of Union Market’s 6th Street NE exterior wall this Friday.
The project is the first foray for a project called Hirshhorn in the City, an initiative linking modern art and the people who create it to the broader community in the District. Future projects include a collaboration between Venice Biennale artist Mark Bradford and Howard students slated for November.
“Our goal is to bring people and ideas together to shape 21st century culture, and Washingtonians are an incredible source of creative innovation,” said Hirshhorn Director Melissa Chiu in a release. “Union Market fully embraces this aspect of the city, making it an ideal home for Ono’s newest work.”
The Hirshhorn’s curator of media and performance art, Mark Beasley, plans to hold conversations with local students about Ono’s art.
Ono has a longstanding relationship with the Hirshhorn, including a decade of keeping her “Wish Tree for Washington, DC” in the museum’s sculpture garden.
