While Shaw has become the home to a number of high-end retailers, thanks to two new developments from JBG, not all of them are working out. Clothing boutique Steven Alan now has a sign outside announcing that the store is closing.

Across the street from Steven Alan is the newly opened Argent, which now resides in the storefront originally utilized by Kit and Ace before that luxury clothing store closed all of its brick-and-mortar locations in the U.S., U.K., and Australia.

Unlike Kit and Ace, though, the New York-based Steven Alan doesn’t appear to be shuttering any of its other 11 locations in the Empire State, California, and elsewhere—just its storefront at 1924 8th St NW.

Steven Alan is part of The Shay, a luxury apartment building a few blocks from the Shaw-Howard Metro station. That, plus the Atlantic Plumbing building, comprise a neighborhood that developer JBG is calling “North End Shaw,” though that rebranding is somewhat controversial.

The Steven Alan store in Shaw opened in November 2015, but it wasn’t the retailer’s first foray into the District. It first signed a lease in Georgetown’s Cady Alley in July 2013, which closed shortly after the new location rolled out the welcome mat.

The store’s final day in business will be Sunday and, according to the sign out front, all of the merchandise is half-off. Steven Alan has not returned a request for comment about the reason for the closure or how many employees will be impacted.

Julie Chase, a spokesperson for JBG, says that the developer’s “near-term plan is to engage a pop-up retailer for the upcoming holiday season while concurrently exploring long-term leasing options” for the storefront.
