Brooklyn Rider is taking the string quartet format to new heights, blurring the lines between genres and drawing praise from critics and audiences well outside of the classical community. The ensemble headlines a bill at Rhizome in support of its latest album, Spontaneous Symbols. 8 p.m. $10 at the door.
Veteran saxophonist B.J. Jansen recently issued his tenth album, Common Ground. He recruited a set of world class artists to join him on this project, including trombonists Delfeayo Marsalis and Duane Eubanks. The band comes to the Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper Club for an 8 p.m. show. $40 plus minimum and surcharge.

The District of Raga, a monthly showcase for South Asian musicians that area violinist Nistha Raj organizes, returns to the Bossa Bistro & Lounge. This month’s iteration features representatives from the Brooklyn Raga Massive, a collective of musicians dedicated to reinterpreting the subcontinent’s classical music. 9 p.m. $5 at the door.

Dutch drummer Philippe Lemm, American pianist Angelo Di Loreto, and American bassist Jeff Koch create a dynamically creative sound, spanning multiple influences. The trio plays the Millennium Stage at 6 p.m. FREE
Area saxophonist Brad Linde celebrates ten years as a bandleader with a 7 p.m. performance at the Atlas. The mini-big band plays material by Teddy Charles, Jimmy Giuffre, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, and more. $25-$28.
Vocalist Jane Monheit is a jazz singer in the most classic sense. She brings her crystal clear voice to Blues Alley for a four night run of 8 and 10 p.m. sets. $40-$45 plus minimum and surcharge.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 27
Kathleen Annie Pannonica Rothschild became known as the “Jazz Baroness” in the 1950s for her role in supporting jazz musicians such as Charlie Parker and Thelonious Monk (in fact, Parker passed away in her apartment). A quartet of local A-listers gathers at Jazz Night in Southwest to recognize her contribution to the bebop era by playing compositions by those she supported. 6 to 9 p.m. $5 at the door. Biographer David Kastin presents a free lecture on the Baroness at noon on the following day in the same venue.
Ron Carter rose to prominence in the ’60s with Miles Davis’s second great quintet. The NEA Jazz Master has appeared on over 2,000 recordings, making him one of the most chronicled musicians of all time. Carter assembled a trio for his 7 and 9 p.m. performances at the Kennedy Center‘s newly renovated Terrace Theater. $35-$50.
Pianist Harold López-Nussa is steeped in the music of his native Cuba, but also brings influences from his extensive travels. His airtight trio comes to AMP for an 8 p.m. performance. $20-$25.
Future Prospect is a Richmond-based fusion band that is playing Mr. Henry’s. 8 to 11 p.m. Two item per person minimum.
Innov Gnawa is a traditional Moroccan gnawa band based in New York City. The group comes to the District as part of the Multiflora Music Festival to play Tropicalia. 8:30 p.m. $10/$12.

The Multiflora Music Festival presents the Amplify Peace Tour at Tropicalia. The multi-genre concert features rapper Omar Offendum, Bassel & The Supernaturals, This is Kayem, Ronnie Malley & Turath Ensemble, and DJ Bella Loki. 100% of the proceeds benefit the Syrian American Medical Society. 7:30 p.m. $20.
Local pianist Levon Mikaelian plays globally inspired jazz that draws heavily from his Armenian roots. He celebrates the release of his new album, Untainted, with an 8 p.m. show at the Arts Barn, located in Gaithersburg, Md. $12-$20.
