D.C. marijuana activists are handing out a more adult kind of treat today, gifting cannabis outside the headquarters of the Department of Housing and Urban Development to bring attention to what they call “one of the scariest issues facing cannabis consumers.”
DCMJ co-founder Adam Eidinger and other advocates plan to hand out dime bags of cannabis grown and recently harvested in D.C..
It is legal to grow, smoke, and give away up to one ounce of cannabis, but not sell it (you can thank Congress for that) under District law. Still, even in D.C. and other states that have legalized medical and/or recreational marijuana, recipients of vouchers for federal housing are barred from partaking and can be evicted for possessing or smoking pot in their homes.
“From California to Colorado to Massachusetts to Washington, D.C., adults should not be forced to live in fear!” protest organizers write. “Your home should be a safe place!”
It is not the group’s first rodeo with mass marijuana handouts. On Inauguration Day, DCMJ organized a huge giveaway, and Trump supporters and protesters alike formed a line several blocks long to get a joint handed out of a makeshift jail cell in Dupont Circle. No arrests were made even though a good number of participants didn’t get a few feet before lighting up in public, which remains illegal under D.C. law.
More recently, a pot giveaway near the Capitol that was designed to conform to District law ended in eight arrests and ultimately two possession charges. Eidinger viewed it as an opportunity to set up a legal battle over D.C. versus federal law, but the U.S. Attorney’s Office of D.C. ended up dropping the charges against him (a judge also dropped a second set of charges stemming from a smoke-in on federal land).
Several elements of the past giveaways will make an appearance today, including the giant jail cell, which will be converted into a symbol of public housing. Given the date, they also have a Halloween hashtag: #HauntedbyHUD.
DCMJ will be handing out pot outside of HUD headquarters (451 7th St. SW) from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
