Want to make your coworkers jealous? Put these events on your agenda and by Monday, you’ll be able to tell them you learned something new, took in some jazz, schmoozed with artists, checked out Hunter S. Thompson’s favorite artwork and even did some yoga—all for free. You’ll have the cubicle’s best answer to “What’d you do this weekend?” we promise.
PARTIES: Congruent opening reception
A handful of D.C. artist collectives combined their powers to create the super-sized show Congruent, which aims to show “a small pie slice” of the DIY arts scene in the city. By “small,” they mean dozens of artists showing off their sculptures, paintings, graphic prints, and more at the Constellation building on H Street. Celebrate at the free opening reception at 6 p.m. on Friday.
ART: Ralph Steadman: A Retrospective at the American University Museum
There’s a reason you might associate Ralph Steadman with the desert or with beer: The artist’s spiky, frenetic drawings have appeared alongside the work of his close collaborator, Hunter S. Thompson, and on the labels of Flying Dog beer. Those works and others, including his illustrated versions of Alice in Wonderland and Treasure Island appear in a traveling retrospective that opens at the American University Museum on Saturday. Steadman himself will appear Saturday at a Q&A with Anita O’Brien, who curated the exhibit for the Cartoon Museum, London—the 5 p.m. talk is already sold out, but there’s a waitlist, and the museum plans to save overflow space to show a livestream. You can still check out the exhibit throughout the weekend, though, and all the way up to August 12.
MUSIC: Ka’Ba SoulSinger at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens
Ka’Ba SoulSinger’s intimate performance style combines the traditions of black spirituals, blues, and spoken word. SoulSinger will perform his piece “A Soundtrack to the Struggle: Muses of the Movement” at 3 p.m. Saturday at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, as part of DC JazzFest.
LEARNING: Drag 101 at the Petworth Library
True, a visit to the library isn’t usually worth teetering in heels for (sorry, libraries, it’s true), but Drag 101 is an exception. At 1 p.m. Saturday, D.C. performers Cherry Snow, Phoenix King, and Miss Buffy Wilde will lead an afternoon of lessons about gender and drag, complete with sing-alongs and dancing. Families welcome.
FITNESS: Yoga at Malcolm X Park
Sunrise yoga sounds perfectly nice (translation: laughably ambitious), but 5 p.m. post-hangover yoga sounds even nicer. Hot Spot Dupont offers free classes each Sunday during the summer from a rotating list of instructors at Malcolm X Park, near the corner of 16th and Euclid streets. Bring your mat and some water to this session, taught by Alex Rosen of St. Mark’s Yoga Center.
