Three storefronts on the strip of 14th Street NW between V and W streets have sat empty since last summer. That’s when Martha’s Table, the charity organization that owned most of the space, which also included Martha’s Outfitters and Smucker Farms, moved its headquarters to Ward 8 after 37 years here, and put its aging building up for sale. Now, this string of buildings is slated to be demolished and turned into a mixed-use apartment building by developer Madison Investments.
But first, the space will get one last hurrah. This weekend, it will host a pop-up art show featuring nine galleries, more than 40 artists, and more than 200 works of art. The show, christened Umbrella, is being presented by art group No Kings Collective.
“The new developer approached No Kings and asked if they would like to do one last event, something cultural related to D.C. and the neighborhood,” says Jason Bowers, the project manager of the event and one of the curators. No Kings Collective has put together large shows featuring dozens of local artists before, including last summer’s Congruent on H Street NE.
“One of the philosophies of No Kings is that a high tide raises all ships,” says Bowers. “While one show is great, if you can do a show with [many] artists, it’s better for everybody.”
Thus, the winding maze of connected rooms and storefronts making up the nine galleries curated by Kelly Towles, Rock Creek Social Club, Fabiola R. Delgado, Naturel, Maggie O’Neill, Mark Kelner, Monochrome Collective, Girlaaa, Zachary Paul Levine, PAKKE, JAB, and District Dodger.
“One of the reasons we chose the name Umbrella is because it’s one instrument that covers everybody, and we are trying to get this large swath of artists from around the DMV,” Bowers says. “Everyone is under one roof.”
The curators were given carte blanche to work with their space, Bowers says, which resulted in very different spaces for each show. Some are stark white galleries, and others look more like huge art installations than a traditional gallery show. There’s going to be a large immersive light installation by District Dodger running in a huge part of the space, Bowers says, that will transform into a dance floor at night, with sound curation by Rock Creek Social Club. There will be food at one end by the event, with food provided by Bun’d Up and drinks by Please Bring Chips.
The event is free to attend, but you do have to RSVP. So far, 5,200 attendees are signed up, according to Bowers.
Umbrella runs Friday-Sunday at 2114 14th St. NW. Opening reception Friday, 5 p.m.-midnight. Open Saturday noon-midnight and Sunday noon -8 p.m.
