Not to jinx it or anything, but you know this awful heat we’ve been having? That’s supposed to break this weekend. Take advantage of it by taking a walk outside and not hating every second of it. Or try some of these equally free things to do in the area.

Go on an art crawl
On First Fridays, galleries and embassies around Dupont Circle throw their doors open in a giant block party. Think of it like a scavenger hunt for D.C. art and fun: The Heurich House Museum will be serving up Atlas Brew Works beer; the Peruvian embassy will have an exhibit from female metal artists; and even Filter Coffeehouse has curated its own exhibit of local artists—and will serve up coffee, of course.
Various locations, Friday, 6 p.m.-8 p.m.

See some comedy before the rest of the world does
When the next Amy Schumer or Hari Kondabolu gets big, don’t you want to be able to say you saw them way back when? Take your chance at Drafthouse Comedy on Friday night, where Attack of the Comics welcomes budding comedians testing out new material. The free show also attracts vets in the D.C. comedy scene: If you’re lucky, founder Haywood Turnipseed Jr. will stop by for a set.

Dance on the water
You know that part in Footloose where Kevin Bacon teaches all his friends to dance at that country western bar? We’re pretty sure that’s what this Saturday at The Wharf will look like at the next of its monthly dancing nights, only outdoors, with the waves gently lapping in the background. Professional dancers will be on hand to show you some country line dancing moves, and Cantina Bambina will be hosting a waterfront beer and wine garden to help you find the courage to try them out. No promises Sarah Jessica Parker will attend.

Take the whole family to a summer festival
As part of its annual conference, the Latinx advocacy nonprofit UnidosUS is hosting a family expo, a weekend of music and games for free. There’ll be children’s storytellers, cooking demonstrations, science experiments, and music performances, including locals Elena & Los Fulanos and the all-female mariachi band Mariachi Flor de Toloache.

Sweat it out
The idea of calling a five mile jog a “fun run” seems oxymoronic, but if a positive attitude gets us out of bed on a Sunday, we’ll take it. Fleet Feet in Adams Morgan hosts weekly Sunday morning runs, varying the course through city streets and Rock Creek Park. Runners’ paces range from 7-12 minutes per mile. Perhaps this is the week to set your alarm for an early jog, before you can use “it’s too hot!” as a credible excuse.
