A 10-year-old girl was killed after a group of masked gunmen opened fire onto a courtyard in Northeast on Monday night. Four adults were also hospitalized with gunshot wounds, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

Police say they responded to the scene, in the 300 block of 53rd Street NE, around 8 p.m. The victim has been identified as Makiyah Wilson, of Northeast.

“All the hope and dreams that her family had for her is gone,” said Assistant D.C. Police Chief Chanel Dickerson, who was acting as police chief, at a press conference in the wake of the shooting. “We have to be outraged.”

Somewhere between 15 and 20 people were enjoying the weather when vehicle drove up, according to Dickerson. Four masked man exited and sprayed gunfire at the crowd, which was standing in a courtyard that abuts a playground.

Wilson was pronounced dead after life-saving efforts failed, according to MPD. D.C. Fire and EMS transported an adult man and an adult woman suffering from gunshot wounds to hospitals. Two other men also went to a hospital with gunshot wounds.

It is not clear if any of the victims were the intended target.

“The people that did this, they did this indiscriminately. They came out in this community without regard to human life and opened fire,” Dickerson said. Mayor Muriel Bowser also went to the scene, urging the community to work with the police to identify the perpetrators.

Police have identified the vehicle as a black Infiniti four-door sedan that is missing its rear bumper. MPD has released still shots from a nearby surveillance camera.
