The family of Makiyah Wilson, the 10-year-old girl who was killed in a shooting on Monday, is raising funds online.
More than 300 people have contributed to the GoFundMe campaign, already exceeding the $10,000 goal set by Makiyah’s mother, Donnetta Wilson.
“No mother should lose a child this way. Our hearts are broken and we stand with you,” wrote one donor.
A spokesperson for GoFundMe has verified to DCist that the fundraiser’s organizer is indeed Wilson. The fundraiser doesn’t specify what the funds will be used for.
Makiyah Wilson had just returned from the pool on the evening of July 16 and was on her way to a nearby ice cream truck, according to several news reports, when she was hit in the chest by gunfire.
Four masked men drove up to a crowd of more than two dozen people in the 300 block of 53rd Street NE and fired indiscriminately around 8 p.m.
Four people were hospitalized with gunshot injuries, according to the Metropolitan Police Department. One of them was Makiyah’s 18-year-old sister, NBC4 reported.
Police have located the vehicle involved and are calling for the community’s help in identifying the suspects.
“The pain that I’m going through— this is never going to be okay. Never in life,” Wilson told WUSA9. “That’s my baby.”
