For the third year in a row, Bon Appetit magazine has recognized three D.C. eateries on its list of the best new restaurants in the country. Maydan, The Line hotel, and Elle earned spots on the 2018 list.
Ok, well, to be fair, The Line itself is three spots. The Adams Morgan hotel was recognized for three of its food concepts: A Rake’s Progress, the Southern-meets-Mid-Atlantic spot from James Beard Award-winner Spike Gjerde; Brothers and Sisters, chef Erik Bruner-Yang’s Taiwanese and Japanese-inspired menu; and Spoken English, the cozy stand-up dinner experience, also from Bruner-Yang.
The Middle Eastern-inspired Maydan, meanwhile, has been quietly picking up major food awards since it opened in 2017, including being named to Food & Wine and Eater’s best restaurants lists. Executive chefs Chris Morgan and Gerald Addison were named rising culinary stars at the RAMMY Awards for their work at Maydan and sister restaurant Compass Rose.
Mount Pleasant’s Ellē, brings pastries, bread, sandwiches, and a dinner menu heavy on fermented dishes to the former Heller’s Bakery space. It’s certainly positioned to do well on Bon Appetit’s list: Ellē is the newest space from Nick Pimentel, who also owns Bad Saint, Bon Appetit’s No. 2 best new restaurant in 2016.
Bon Appetit has a longstanding affection for D.C. (and who could blame them?), naming it the restaurant city of the year in 2016 and crowning Rose’s Luxury its best new restaurant of the year in 2014. Himitsu, Timber Pizza, and Pineapple & Pearls were named to the Top 50 list in 2017, following Bad Saint, The Dabney, and Tail Up Goat being named in 2016.
The magazine narrows its list down to a Hot 10 on August 14.
