Ben’s Chili Bowl is turning 60 this year, and it’s having a heck of a block party.
On August 22, there’s going to be an all-day tribute to Virginia Ali, who founded the iconic local chain with her husband Ben in 1958, outside the original U Street location.
Although closures of U Street are historically pretty rare—the 2015 Funk Parade was the first time in 17 years that the city closed the thoroughfare to cars—the city is shutting down several blocks for the event.
The party itself goes from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., but street closures will extend beyond those times. Per the Metropolitan Police Department, drivers can expect a complete road closure from 11th and 13th streets between 9:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. (a partial closure will be in effect from 5 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.)
Proceeds from all sales at every Ben’s Chili Bowl location on Wednesday will go to the Ben’s Chili Bowl Foundation, which does community work and gives grants to organizations like Mary’s Center and College Bound. At night, there will be a fundraising gala at the Lincoln Theatre—tickets range from $60 to $150.
Ben’s original location is a neighborhood staple where such luminaries as Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole, Martin Luther King, Jr., and former President Barack Obama have eaten. The iconic mural outside was updated last year with more than a dozen famous black Washingtonians.
Earlier this year, the D.C. Council passed emergency legislation renaming the 1200 block of U Street after Ben’s Chili Bowl in preparation for the 60th anniversary. The celebration will include the unveiling of new signage designating the block “Ben’s Chili Bowl Way.”
