After the joy of a long Thanksgiving weekend, Yellow Line riders will be jolted back to reality in the most D.C. of ways: service on the Yellow Line will completely halt for 14 days as Metro completes repairs along the bridge connecting Pentagon City with L’Enfant Plaza (you know, the long, scary one over open water).
According to WMATA, the train tracks need grout pad reconstruction and fastener replacement along the entire length of the bridge. From November 26 through December 9, the capital improvement project will completely shut down Yellow Line service, but, at the very least, all stations will remain open through most of the work.
The Blue Line will be running from Franconia-Springfield to Largo Town Center (its normal route) and from Huntington to Largo Town Center, capturing the two stations in Alexandria normally served by the Yellow Line exclusively. But there will be delays: the Blue Line trains have to get to Huntington through the Rosslyn Tunnel, which has capacity restraints. Trains will have to run about half as frequently as usual during rush hour.
Metro spokespeople told the Washington Post that a full-line shutdown was necessary as the agency needs to do extensive repair work on the bridge, which opened in 1983. “It’s a structure that just needs a lot of work,” Metro General Manager Paul Wiedefeld told the outlet. “There’s no other way around it when you’re dealing with a structure over the river.”
Here’s more on the exact schedule, from the transit agency:
Weekdays:
- No Yellow Line train service; use Blue Line instead for travel between Virginia and DC.
- Blue Line trains will operate every 16 minutes between Franconia-Springfield and Largo Town Center and between Huntington and Largo Town Center.
- After 8 p.m. Blue Line trains will operate every 20 minutes between Franconia-Springfield and Largo Town Center and between Huntington and Largo Town Center.
- Red, Green, Orange and Silver Line trains will operate on a normal weekday schedule.
