Two women were killed on Wednesday night when a passenger bus struck them at the intersection of Seventh Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW. The bus appeared to be a tour bus, with photos showing the words “Eyre Bus, Tour, Travel” printed on the side.

At around 9:40 p.m. on Wednesday night, the bus was traveling northbound on Seventh Street. The driver then made a left turn onto Pennsylvania Avenue, striking two women in the crosswalk, according to the Metropolitan Police Department. The women suffered life-threatening injuries and were taken to a hospital from the scene. Both women passed away.

Police have identified the women as 61-year-old Monica Adams Carlson and 85-year-old Cora Louise Adams. Carlson was the mayor of Skagway, an Alaskan town of about 1,000 people, about 100 miles north of Juneau, NBC washington reports. Adams was Carlson’s mother, according to the outlet.

Detectives with the Major Crash Investigations Unit are investigating the crash, according to MPD.

Traffic fatalities are up more than 13 percent this year, despite the city’s goal of reducing deaths to zero by 2024.
