The federal government shut down for the third time this year just after midnight on Saturday. While the D.C. government remains open, and is picking up some slack for the feds, the partial shutdown will still have a severe impact on security guards, janitors, and other federal building workers who will lose wages during the holidays.
The relative frequency of government shutdowns means that D.C. has developed some traditions for the circumstance—namely, food and drink deals for workers otherwise deemed “non essential.” José Andrés has long offered free food for federal workers at his restaurants during shutdowns, and a slew of other establishments have followed suit, or are offering specials and discounts for anyone with a government employee ID.
