D.C. police say they’re responding to a call about a person who has barricaded themselves in a room in 7th Flats, a residential building in Shaw. About a dozen squad cars and emergency response vehicles have been stopped on 7th Street NW between T and S Streets for several hours.
On Twitter, the Metropolitan Police Department said the person in question is having a “mental health episode” and has locked themselves inside a residence. There is reportedly no threat to anyone in the area.
We are there for a person having a mental health episode who has barricaded themselves inside a residence alone. There is no immediate threat to the community.

The Metro Transit Police is also on scene and has blocked off the 7th and S Street NW entrance to the Shaw Metro at the request of MPD.
Shaw-Howard: MTPD is on scene. @DCPoliceDept has police activity outside the station and requested the 7/S entrance closed. Please avoid this intersection and use 8/R entrance instead. Buses on Georgia Ave will be detoured. #wmata https://t.co/e4vwpShtH8

Most of the residents of 7th Flats are allowed to enter and exit the building at the direction of officers. Residents who live on the floor in question are not permitted to leave their apartments, according to an MPD spokesperson. Management for 7th Flats told residents in an email that MPD was called to assist property management with “erratic behavior” from a resident on Monday morning.
“Management has received a report of an ongoing incident involving erratic behavior by a resident at the property this morning, Monday, January 14, 2019. The D.C. Police Department was assisting the property staff with this matter when a standoff ensued,” the email reads. “We ask that you follow the direction of the local authorities until the all-clear is given and the situation is remediated.”
The entire block is closed to traffic.
