Just after 10:30 on Tuesday morning, officers from the Metropolitan Police Department responded to a call about a stabbing at E.L. Haynes Public Charter School in Petworth. Officers found a 15-year-old student suffering a serious stab wound and transported him to a local hospital, where he’s in stable condition, Police Chief Peter Newsham told reporters at the school on Tuesday.
A 17-year-old student has been taken into custody as a suspect of the stabbing, Newsham said. It appeared there was some sort of dispute, and the student was stabbed in a restroom at the school. Officers recovered a knife at the scene. Police are not yet sure what the fight was about, Newsham said.
It’s not clear if the 17-year-old in custody will be charged as a minor or an adult, Newsham told reporters at the scene.
“Young people have got to find a different way to resolve their disputes,” Newsham said. “It disrupts all the kids. All the kids are trying to go to lunch at this time of day and now they’ve got to wait because you’ve got police in there investigating a crime.”
E.L. Haynes is a public K-12 charter with two campuses, one in Columbia Heights and one in Petworth. There are 1,150 students currently attending, according to the school’s website.
