A bright orange creature of mayhem is headed to Capitol Hill.
Gritty, the beloved Philadelphia Flyers mascot-turned-meme-turned-messiah, will be among the illustrious guests at the 2019 Hockey Day on the Hill, alongside members of the Stanley Cup-winning Washington Capitals and their (very lame by comparison) mascot, Slapshot.
D.C.’s only voice on the Hill, Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton, is a member of the House Hockey Caucus, and she hosted the Stanley Cup in her congressional office last October. The February 6 briefing will focus on “how hockey empowers children with the skills needed to fill careers of the future.”
Let’s be honest, though—the real thrill is wondering what Gritty will do in the hallowed halls of Congress. How will he make his big entrance? Will he clothesline legislators like he did sumo wrestlers? Will adoring antifascists accompany him? Here’s hoping he sticks around long enough in D.C. to crash a wedding, or at least fill in Alex Ovechkin on what he missed by skipping the All-Star Game earlier that week.
