As Mayor Muriel Bowser kicks off a series of budget forums, she is announcing a month of free rides on the D.C. Circulator.

These two events are linked, however tenuously, by the mayor’s “#FairShot February” campaign.

“A free Circulator is one way we can use our resources to break down barriers to opportunity—but it’s certainly not the only way. Throughout February and before I send my budget to the Council, I hope Washingtonians from across all eight wards will join us at our Budget Engagement Forums to build on this initiative by sharing their priorities and ideas for making our city’s prosperity more inclusive,” Bowser said in a statement.

It is not clear how the city is paying for the free rides or what it will cost. Representatives for the mayor and the District’s Department of Transportation (which oversees the Circulator) have not responded a request for comment.

The Circulator’s annual ridership exceeds 5 million trips. The fare is normally $1 per ride.
