Starting Friday, movie lovers can catch Marvel’s 2018 megahit Black Panther for free at select AMC theaters for a limited time, the theater company announced this week.
Screenings will be shown at participating theaters at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. from February 1-7 in honor of Black History Month. Participating theaters in the D.C. area include:
- AMC Georgetown (3111 K St. NW)
- AMC Tysons’ Corner Center (7850e Tysons Corner Center, McLean)
- AMC Hoffman Center 22 (206 Swamp Fox Road, Alexandria)
- AMC Rio Cinemas 18 (9811 Washingtonian Center, Gaithersburg)
- AMC Rivertowne 12 (6075 Oxon Hill Road, Oxon Hill)
Viewers can grab tickets now on the AMC site. Plenty of the screenings already have waiting lists, so move fast.
The free screenings come less than a month before the 2019 Academy Awards on Feb. 24. Black Panther is nominated for six Oscars, including best picture, best costume design, and best original score. It is the first superhero film to be nominated for best picture, and grossed more than $1.3 billion worldwide. D.C.’s African American History Museum is also home to the costume worn by Chadwick Boseman in the film, which was displayed during the museum’s first African American Film Festival last fall.
Other Academy Award-nominated films have hosted screenings close to the Oscars in the past, including last year’s Get Out.
