The Handmaid’s Tale—a show that’s alternately been called “horrific,” “cynical,” “brutal,” and “harrowing“—chose a sunny day to set up shop in D.C. The Hulu series is filming at the National Mall, according to social media posts, arranging a fleet of handmaids on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. Stars Elisabeth Moss, Yvonne Strahovski, and Joseph Fiennes have been spotted on set.

We already had a hint that Handmaid’s was headed to America’s—er, Gilead’s—capital. A trailer for the Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning drama’s third season premiered during the Super Bowl earlier this month, ending with a shot of thousands of bonnet-clad handmaids lined up around the Reflecting Pool. “They should have never given us uniforms if they didn’t want us to be an army,” June (played by Moss) says in voiceover. In the shot, the Washington Monument appears to have been converted into a cross.

It’s not exactly the first time handmaids have visited the District: Protestors donned the distinctive red robes and bonnets at demonstrations during the confirmation hearings for Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh last year. In 2017, Planned Parenthood organized a similar protest of a proposed healthcare bill that would have restricted funding to organizations that provide access to abortions.
