The District is hungry for revenue. Film and television producers have money. Logically, it only makes sense for the city’s brass to try and court them to film here — which would explain why Mayor Vince Gray is taking some time out of his busy desk work schedule this afternoon to visit the set of Covert Affairs.

It’s shaping up to be a rather busy weekend around the District. In addition to the first weekend of the National Cherry Blossom Festival and the National Marathon (we’ll have more on that later), there’ll be a big-time movie shoot going on. According to the D.C. Office of Motion Picture and Television Development, the Clint Eastwood-directed, Leonardo DiCaprio-starring J. Edgar Hoover biopic J. Edgar will be filming on Saturday and Sunday in “downtown D.C.”

In February, we heard about the next television show featuring life in the District. Georgetown is slated to be a “primetime soap about young people behind the power brokers of D.C.” We have a little update now, via this reader-submitted image of a letter that went out to Georgetown residents a couple weeks ago.

Several tipsters emailed us this morning to let us know that there was a film crew, “replete with police cordons and director’s chairs,” putting images to celluloid this morning on R Street NW between New Hampshire Avenue and 18th Street NW in Dupont Circle. The District Department of Transportation emailed this afternoon to let us know that Michael Bay and company (along with their sweet, sweet money) will film Transformers 3 on location in Washington next week. Filming for the third cinematic installment of the Great Decepticon-Autobot Conflict will begin on Monday, and based on street closures and parking restrictions, the shooting will be contained on the Mall. (Looks like Bay may have gotten his wish to film a bunch of historical stuff blowing up after all.) Filming in D.C. will wrap on the 15th, so be sure to bring your camera with you if you’re near the Mall next week.

The number of people at the corner of 18th and Columbia Tuesday night looked more like what you’d expect on a Saturday night. Except that it was as bright as day.
