President Donald Trump confused onlookers Monday afternoon by trying to make nice with D.C. Attorney General Karl Racine at a press event, lavishing praise on one of the AGs accusing him of violating the Constitution in a court of law.

Trump was discussing the First Step Act, a criminal justice reform bill, and thanking the National Association of Attorneys General for its help in passing the law. He singled out Racine who, according to the Washington Post, was sitting in the front row. Racine is part of the leadership at NAAG.

“And a special thanks to Attorney General Karl Racine,” the president reportedly said. “Where’s Karl? Karl, Karl? Hi, Karl. Great job. Thank you very much, you were very helpful. Everybody said Karl, I feel like you’re—like I know you. That’s pretty good.”

“I feel like I know you as well, Mr. President,” Racine replied.

“Karl really was fantastic, from District of Columbia.”

Here’s a video of the exchange:

Racine has made a name for himself as one of the president’s staunchest opponents, consistently leading and joining suits with other attorneys general fighting Trump’s policies. Along with Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh, Racine is suing the president for violating the Constitution’s emoluments (or anti-corruption) clause, accusing him of using the presidency to enrich himself. That case is continuing to move through the courts. Just last week, Racine also became the third attorney general to subpoena documents from the president’s inaugural committee trying to find out exactly how money was spent for his huge inaugural events.

Not exactly the kind of activity you’d think would earn praise from Trump, but the two men definitely do know each other, I guess.
