After four years in Anacostia, Cheers @ The Big Chair café will close Friday, eliminating one of a handful of sit-down restaurants in the historically African-American community.

In a Facebook post announcing the closure, co-owner Dionne Reeder said that her landlord, Curtis Brothers, would not offer an extension on her lease. “Trust me, we tried with all we could to negotiate a new lease,” Reeder says in the post. “We are confident that what God has for us is for us!” DCist reached out to Curtis Investment Group, which did not respond to a request for comment. Reeder also didn’t return multiple requests for comment.

To recognize its supporters and the community, the café will serve discounted food on Friday, bring in multiple DJs starting at noon, and throw a closing party from 8 p.m. to midnight, according to the Facebook post.

The restaurant’s closure comes nearly a week after Busboys and Poets opened its seventh location in Anacostia to significant fanfare about a block away from her café, but Reeder clarified that the Andy Shallal-helmed chain had nothing to do with the decision to close. She thanked them for taking a chance on Anacostia and urged the community to support them. “Having Busboys and Poets come to Anacostia was a dream come true!” Reeder wrote on Facebook. “Their presence has increased business in just a short while.”

Reeder campaigned for an at-large seat on the D.C. Council last November touting herself as a small business owner. She was backed by Mayor Muriel Bowser in her unsuccessful bid to oust incumbent Councilmember Elissa Silverman, which turned contentious and became the most-watched race of the local general election.

The entrepreneur indicated she’ll continue to fight for food options in the neighborhood after she leaves.“We are not gone forever, just for now!” Reeder wrote on Facebook. “We are committed to helping to end the food desert” east of the Anacostia River.
